Organic Waste Pickup Program
Beginning in 2013, food scraps and all other organic materials will be separated from general household waste. Metro Vancouver's plan outlines that all residential organic waste be banned from landfills by 2015. Currently all waste picked up by AJM is delivered to Wastech and then shipped to Cache Creek landfill. Recent studies show that 30% - 40% of residential waste comprises of organic materials, mainly food waste.
With our new organic waste program, the organic waste collected will remain local for composting and it will be converted back to soil and other useful products. With the reduction of tonnage destined for landfill, it will help to reduce tipping fees, greenhouse gasses and offset the cost for the additional services in the future.
You will be able to use your current waste can or you can add a new disposal can (no larger than 77L or 80L). Please Organic Waste Recycling use only durable waste cans with two sturdy handles for easy management and dumping. Please ensure cans have a water-tight, removable lid that does not detach from the can. We will supply you with a new Organics label which we ask to be placed on the cans you are going to use for organic waste and when placing the waste cans out for pickup, ensure the label is facing the street. You are welcome to use as many organic waste containers as you need.
